The cheesy name tag, the couples tables where the participants came and went after a time limit. He saw these types of events on various sitcoms on the telly, but never imagined himself in one of these personally. 'It’s simply for business,' Lux tells himself. Though he couldn’t help but feel a little nervous.[break][break]
He turns over to his Meowstic, who’s shamelessly stuffing his face with the plate of food he had picked for himself. Lux glares and tugs on the Pokemon’s squishy cheek, who whines with his cheeks stuffed like a greedy Morpeoko. “Behave yourself, Sirius. We want to make a good impression.”[break][break]
And just on cue, a gentleman sits down across from him. Actually, upon closer inspection he seemed a little familiar.[break][break]
“Oh, hello. My name’s Lux. Sorry if it’s a little out of the blue, but I feel like I’ve seen you around?”[break][break]
Not long after the realization hits them, and they smile, bright like the sun.[break][break]
“That’s right! The ranger’s base in Fortree! We’re both rookies, how could I forget?” He laughs softly, embarrassed at his scattered memory. “Well then, I guess it’s appropriate to ask, If I may —”[break][break]
Lux’s features soften, his hand absentmindedly petting his Partner Pokemon as he gently spoke. “What inspired you to become a ranger?”[break][break]

A nervous sigh escaped from Shiro’s lips as he accepted a nametag from the event organizer, glancing around the room for familiar faces. Luckily, there was no one he recognized from Team Rocket, which spared him the embarrassment of being discovered at speed dating of all places. [break][break]

Not that he looked down upon others that were here, especially considering he was in a unique situation of his own. Once most people learned about his past, there were usually hostilities involved, meaning that he could seldom find comfort in the company of those in Fortree City. [break][break]

So, that’s why he was here. These people in Slateport didn’t know him, at least not without a quick Google search. That opened the opportunity for unbiased interaction before the other shoe inevitably dropped. Perhaps one person might even give him the benefit of the doubt, though he wasn’t holding out hope. [break][break]

“Oh, hey.” A familiar face, another Ranger. “Coincidence seeing you here. I’m Shiro.” Did they know? Like the countless other members of the Ranger Corps that sneered and turned their backs to him? [break][break]

“Oh, uh…” His eyes shifted nervously, unsure whether to answer with a full or half truth. “I wanted to better myself, by helping people and Pokémon.” A soft shrug lifted his shoulders, playing the situation off as casual. “I wasn’t exactly a boyscout a few years ago, y’know?” A slight pause before he deflected. "How about you? Why'd you join?"

Lucky for Shiro, Lux hadn't had a clue. It’s their first official meeting yet Lux was under the impression that Shiro seemed out of place of sorts. In more ways than one. He couldn’t discern why for certain, but everyone deserved to feel included throughout their life. Lux tilts his head with a soft smile. He wanted to calm the uncertainty lurking in his heart, even if just a little. [break][break]
“I think that’s a wonderful reason to be a ranger, Shiro. It really does better a person. Humbles you, even.”[break][break]
When the question redirects back to himself, Lux handles it pretty well and hums, petting his partner who smiles contently, twin tails twitching.[break][break]
“Mine’s really not an impressive reason or anything. My parents are environmentalists, studying the lands Pokemon inhabit and call home. I joined because of my extended knowledge of that, and my overall love for Pokemon. They’ve always seemed to like me, too.”[break][break]
Even his older sister had a successful athletic career. He wanted to contribute to the family in some way even if he had nothing to prove, (an age old excuse his beloved parents would use to try and soothe a late bloomer like himself.)[break][break]
“Anyhow.. we’re in the same rank, yes? I think we should work together sometime. I feel like it would benefit us both.”[break][break]
Before he can say anymore, his Meowstic scrambles to grab a lavender macaroon off his plate, politely handing it over to Shiro.[break][break]
Lux blinks. “Oh.. he usually never shares his food.” [break][break]
With men he wanted to say, but refrains. Best not to ruin the moment![break][break]

“I think we are the same rank, yeah.” There was a moment of hesitation when Lux offered for the two of them to work together, unsure how to answer a question that hadn’t been posed to him before now. “Y-yeah, sure we should do that sometime.” Would Lux feel the same if they knew about his past? Shiro imagined it wouldn’t be long before the truth came out, he might as well enjoy the interim. [break][break]

“Oh, thanks!” A hand reached out and gingerly accepted the treat from their Meowstick, taking a bite with a small smile. “I’m glad they seem to like me.” If they should accept, Shiro would attempt to give them some head scratches. “Unfortunately, my Toxel is uh…” Glancing down below the table, the Pokémon was sound asleep, snoozing away against their trainer’s leg.

Lux stifles a snort at the Toxel who sleeps away the day. “It’s alright. I find it cute.” It vaguely reminds him of his own Pokemon who couldn't’ stay up past certain hours. Even as a little Espurr he had loved his sleep. Meowstic goes back to his pile of snacks after the kind offering, now ignoring Shiro, it’s just how he was sadly. A bonafide glutton. Lux, thankfully, is the one with manners![break][break]
“Strange little one, isn’t he? You wouldn’t suspect he’s the one that accompanies me on all my ranger missions.” Of course, he’s in the process of training a few other Pokemon for specific missions, but Sirius is always with him, for better or worse. [break][break]
“But yes, I would like to work together sometime! I try to appear upbeat, and while there is some truth to it.. I’ve been finding it difficult to find someone to work c-consistently with.” He admits bashfully, expression subtly shy to match. "Of course, outside of being co-workers.. I think being friends doesn't sound half bad. Wouldn't you agree?"[break][break]
